SIEBEL OPEN UI
With the oracle fusion coming into picture Siebelites all over
the world has almost predicted the
end of SIEBEL CRM, but with latest
innovations packs for Siebel will surely make everyone rethink
on the very
thought.
User Interface has been the most disappointing feature of Siebel
Application. It is not flexible, intuitive,
user friendly or cool. In addition
to that we are stuck only with IE for High Interactivity (HI) applications.
It
would seem that Siebel is unaware of all the development that is happening on
the web with respect to
web apps and user interface. However it is going to
change soon.
So what’s the buzz around on open UI these days? Here is a gist
as to how Oracle is innovating Siebel
which surely does signifies that Oracle
is not going to take it focus away from Siebel in recent time.
For us it’s time
to showcase the same to customers the new eye catching, smart, interactive
,pioneering
, refined technology that customer has been looking in Siebel, which
surely will bait them to get
upgraded to new versions which Siebel calls as
IP(innovation pack) 8.1.1.9 and 8.2.2.2.
Why we Need flexibility of using Siebel on any device /
platform?
Features of Open UI:
1) Browser Variety:
With Open UI comes the promise that we can bathe in Siebel data
in variety of browsers of
our choice like Firefox, chrome, Internet Explorer
on Mobiles and TABLETS u name it.
Following
is an example of a call center application opened on Chrome.
2. Open Framework:
The main consideration is the open UI framework itself. Siebel
has been using the active X
High interactivity framework since last 12 years of
its life. Open UI however utilizes java script,
mostly comprises of jQuery and
HTML.
3. User Experience:
Siebel Open UI is very similar to any existing Siebel UI as far
as the concept of list, form and
explorer applets are concerned. On the other
hand, some areas such as the product configurato
r have been totally redesigned.
The user experience is highly improved with web based UI which
is smart, efficient with modern look and
feel. Siebel Open UI will
allow use of external JS Frameworks such as jQuery to
provide intuitive
features such as search suggestion, auto form
completion and cool looking tool tips that users always
wanted.
Some More Interesting Features:
Site Map Filter :
Just type in a search term and the site map entries will be
filtered on the fly
Browser Feature Support
Siebel Open UI supports most (if not all) of the browser’s
native capabilities such aszoom
, print or save to file. However, Quick
Print is still the better option to produce printable output.
LOV Auto Complete
Now there is true auto complete for static pick lists. For
example you can type ‘pp’ in
theSales Stage field of an Opportunity
and the dropdown box will present ‘Approved’ as a matching value.
Tabs or Tree?
Navigate to Tools – User Preferences – Behavior and
set your preferred layout and theme.
Administrators can also provide custom
themes.
Advantages:
1) Simple process for deployment
2) True web based deployment
3) Simple client side patching
4) Highly optimized usability and
productivity
5) Open next generation browser
client for desktop and mobile.
6) Open UI can co-exist with other
UI options (HI, SI) on the same server
Challenges:
1) With the new jQuery based
framework, there will be an initial skill gap for most Siebel developers.
So we
need to prepare for extra training and literature for Siebel development team
in that area.
2) With this open architecture
comes a great deal of responsibility and a high need for discipline.
3) OpenUI and HI UI can’t run in
the same OM. Maybe not a big issue but if there are non-standard
UI templates
that OpenUI may not be able to render then those will not
be accessible to the user.
4) Now that it will be available
across platforms, across browsers how will that complexity of options
be tested
and supported – as there is an almost constant stream of browsers upgrades.
Where we can get it?
Siebel included the open UI in IP 8.1.1.9 23016 and 8.2.2.2
23016. The patch set is available for
download on oracle support.
